The Hidden Self

For years, I masked the me within,
A battle I seemed to never win.
From skin to body, heart and soul,
I played a part, I was never whole.

I saw the world through clouded eyes,
Thought I was lacking, bound by lies.
Covered up, I played a part,
Concealing scars upon my heart.

But one day dawned a light so true,
I learned to love the me I knew.
Flaws, I thought, were marks of shame,
Became the stripes that bore my name.

When life’s against you, dark and tough,
Remember this: you are enough.
Beautiful, loved, in every way,
I know it’s tough, but it’ll be okay.
